Thousands of Surgical Errors Occur Every Year
Research from John Hopkins University found events that should never happen in surgery, "never events" occur at least 4,000 times a year. The findings, published in
Surgery, revealed the prevalence of "never events" in hospitals through an analysis of national malpractice claims. The researchers studied over 80,000 "never events" that occurred between 1990 and 2010.
They estimated that at least 39 times a week a surgeon leaves a foreign object inside a patient such as towels or sponges. The research found that surgeons perform the wrong surgery or they operate on the wrong body party about 20 times a week. The study examined data from the National Practitioner Data Bank which calculates the total number of wrong-site, wrong-patient and wrong-procedure surgeries.
Over a 20 year period, the researchers found that:
- Over 9,744 paid malpractice claims cost over $1.3 billion.
- Of those, 6.6% died, while 32.9% sustained permanent injuries and 59.2% were temporarily injured.
- Approximately 4,044 "never events" occur each year in the U.S. according to estimates by the research team who analyzed the rates of malpractice claims arising from adverse surgical events.
The researchers say that the actual number of surgical mistakes are likely even higher. Additionally, nearly two-thirds of surgeons who made a surgical mistake had been cited on more than one separate medical malpractice report in the past, and over 12.4% were named in more than one surgical never event.
