Unsecured Cargo Accidents
Many of us have seen large, unstable loads on the back of trucks, but once we've been injured by falling debris, our lives can change in the blink of an eye. Unsecured cargo can fall off of an 18-wheeler, a flatbed truck, a box truck, tractor trailer, a dump truck or another tractor trailer, creating hazardous obstacles as objects tumble and crash down the roadway.
An unsecured or poorly balanced load can shift, causing brake problems or rollovers, which can rapidly cause collisions and trucks to crush smaller passenger sized vehicles in their path. Semi-trucks play a key role in the transportation of goods, supplies and equipment in the U.S., but unfortunately not all loads are secured properly, nor do all trucking companies adhere to state and federal weight limits.
When debris, cargo or equipment fall off of a tractor-trailer or a truck bed, serious accidents and injuries can ensue for other drivers sharing the road, some of which can be deadly.
Unsecured cargo can cause:
- Truck rollovers, particularly at curves or turns
- Jackknife accidents
- Falling or flying debris
- Hazardous cargo spills
A 2004 study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that 25,000 motor vehicle accidents were caused each year by unsecured cargo loads, demonstrating that unsecured cargo is a threat to all drivers and passengers on the road. All fleet managers and truck drivers should be very concerned about how their trucks are loaded and if they are overloaded. An overloaded truck is in violation of numerous state and federal regulations and for many reasons is unsafe to operate.
