Diabetes Drug "Januvia" Causes Adverse Side-Effects

Januvia is a drug prescribed to help treat adults with type-2 diabetes. It is manufactured by Merck and was approved by the FDA in October 2006. It is also available in a combination pill, known as Janumet, which contains the drug metformin. Januvia and Janumet are the first in a new class of oral diabetes medications that improve blood sugar control in patients with type-2 diabetes. In September 2009 the FDA issued a revision to the warning label of the drugs Januvia and Janumet regarding Januvia side effects, including pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and thyroid cancer.

Between October 2006 and February 2009 the FDA received 88 reports of acute pancreatitis with people taking Januvia and Janumet. These reports included severe forms of pancreatitis, such as hemorrhagic pancreatitis and necrotizing pancreatitis. The FDA's review of these cases found that 21% occurred within 30 days of starting Januvia or Janumet, and 53% of the cases resolved themselves after Januvia or Janumet were discontinued. Acute pancreatitis is associated with significant illness and possible death, making early detection important in reducing adverse side-effects. Attorneys are investigating potential lawsuits against Merck & Co. alleging product liability, negligence, and failure to warn claims.
